When an expression has more than one operation, follow a strict order so everyone gets the same answer.
- 1
1. Brackets first
Solve anything inside ( ) before anything else.
8 × (5 + 2) → 8 × 7 = 56
- 2
2. Orders / Exponents
Then powers and roots, like 3² or √9.
2 + 3² = 2 + 9 = 11
- 3
3. Division & Multiplication
Work left to right — they are equal in rank.
12 ÷ 4 × 2 = 3 × 2 = 6
- 4
4. Addition & Subtraction
Finally add and subtract, again left to right.
10 − 3 + 2 = 7 + 2 = 9
💡 Tip. Say it aloud: 'Brackets, Orders, Divide, Multiply, Add, Subtract.'
